Small things that matter
Reading about locks is not most people's idea of a good evening, so we have kept these pieces short. Each one answers a single question clearly, from how to keep a lock working through a cold snap to what to think about before adding a keypad at the office.

Lockout Services
Can a frozen lock be opened, and how do I stop it freezing again?
Frozen cylinders open well with patience: lock de-icer or gentle warming melts the ice so the plug turns, and the cylinder is then dried and treated with a dry lubricant that sheds moisture. Hot water is avoided because it refreezes and can crack cold metal. To prevent a repeat, keep a storm door closed over the main lock, fit a keyhole cover on exposed side doors, and carry a small de-icer in your coat or car through the freeze-thaw months. How do you confirm I am allowed to have the business opened?
Through identification and a link to the premises. An owner shows photo identification with the lease, business registration or a document addressed to the company at that address. A manager or employee is confirmed by a call to the owner, head office or property manager on a number the locksmith can verify. If everything is inside, the check is finished after entry, before the locksmith leaves. Business Lockout Service
How long does the extraction usually take?
It depends on how the piece is sitting. A protruding fragment in a plug at rest can be out in moments. A deep piece behind lifted pins takes patient work with hooks and spirals. A glued or corroded fragment may mean removing the cylinder and freeing it from behind. Cutting and testing the new key, and any door adjustment, add their own time. The locksmith gives a sense of it after the first look. Broken Key Extraction
How is a forced storefront door repaired?
Aluminum storefront doors are attacked at the narrow stile, which bends under a pry bar, or at the hookbolt and glass. The locksmith straightens or replaces the damaged section where possible, fits a new narrow-stile deadbolt or hookbolt with its strike, and adds a latch guard or anti-pry astragal along the meeting edge so a bar has no purchase. Cores are rekeyed and codes reviewed. The inside release stays a single motion so the exit route is unchanged. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
I rent. Can I have my locks rekeyed?
Yes, with your landlord's agreement, which is what the tenancy rules here expect before a tenant changes a lock. Most landlords are glad to consent when a key has gone missing or a former roommate has moved out, and the locksmith will want to hear that the landlord knows and will be holding one of the new keys. The rekey itself runs the same as for an owner, and a short note listing the doors done is handy to pass to the landlord. Lock Rekeying
Does a deadbolt work with a storm door or screen door?
It does, with one check: the thumb-turn and the outside cylinder have to clear the storm door when it closes. Most storm doors leave enough depth, but a low-profile deadbolt trim is chosen where the gap is tight. The storm door's own latch is separate and does not replace a bolt on the main door, since a screen frame gives little resistance on its own. Deadbolt Installation
How do I look after a new lock so it stays smooth?
Very little is needed. Whatever lubricant and interval the cylinder maker specifies, worked into the keyway with a few turns of the key, keeps the pins free; using the wrong product collects grit instead of helping. Wipe salt off exterior hardware during winter melts. Snug the hinge and strike screws each spring and fall as the door moves with humidity. Cut spare keys from a crisp original rather than a worn copy. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Will the door look any different afterwards?
Usually not, when the original case is repaired: the same knobs, escutcheons, faceplate and strike go back on in the same positions, and the only visible change is paint or grime cleared from the edges that were catching. A replacement case is chosen to match the pocket so original trim is reused wherever spacing allows, though an occasional case needs a small pocket or fixing change, explained beforehand. High Security Locks
Do drop safes or under-counter cash safes work the same way as a larger floor safe?
The identification step is the same regardless of size, but the lock inside is not assumed from the safe's size: a small drop safe or under-counter unit can carry anything from a basic keypad to a high-security lock, so each is identified on its own before manipulation, reset or a combination change proceeds, with the same care around authority and aftercare applying equally. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Can a safe be concealed inside a closet or behind a panel?
Yes, provided the spot chosen still allows full anchoring and enough clearance for the door to swing open completely. A closet floor, the back of a built-in cabinet, or a recessed wall cavity can all work, though each limits the size of unit that will actually fit and reach the anchor points properly. Balancing concealment against how often the safe gets opened is worth discussing before a spot is chosen. Safe Installation & Servicing
What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?
The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
What do you do with the old keys?
They are gathered, tested at each rekeyed door to confirm they no longer work, and then cut through so they can never be used or copied. You can keep the pieces or the locksmith takes them away. Any old key that still operates a door you chose to leave unchanged is handed back and noted on the chart, so it is clear which keys remain live and which are scrap. Commercial Rekeying
What is a restricted keyway and do I need one?
A restricted or patented keyway limits who can cut a copy of your keys to whoever holds the manufacturer's authorization record, rather than any hardware counter. It suits doors behind which cash, records or controlled supplies sit. A standard keyway is simpler to administer and works well for lower-risk doors where duplication control matters less. Master Key System Design
What information should we have ready before the visit?
It helps to know which doors should be controlled, roughly how many people will need a credential, whether any of those doors are also fire exits, and who in the business will administer the system afterward. A floor plan or a walk-through on site fills in anything easier to show than describe, and neither is required in advance. Access Control Installation
What should I have ready before the visit?
Knowing the intended use of the room, roughly how many people it holds, whether any doors are already fire-rated, and whether any of them are part of a pair helps the locksmith bring the right devices. If a fire inspector or building official has already given a note about the opening, having that note or its reference number on hand keeps the visit focused on what was actually flagged. Car Keys
Can you open a pickup, a motorcycle, a trailer or a motorhome?
Yes. Trucks and vans often have a separate cargo or tailgate lock, motorhomes use household-style cylinders on their living-space doors, trailers and hitch locks are padlock-type hardware, and motorcycle seat and steering locks are small wafer cylinders. Say what the vehicle is when you call so the right picks and blanks are in the van, and expect the same authorisation check for each. Car Lockout Service
My fob is cracked but still works. Do I need a whole new key?
Usually not. A cracked case often protects a healthy circuit board and transponder, and those can be moved into a new shell of the same pattern with a freshly cut blade. Because the electronics are unchanged, nothing needs programming, and the rebuilt key behaves exactly as before. A new key is the answer when the board is corroded, a button has died or the chip has been damaged. Car Key Replacement
Is it possible to leave out certain functions on the spare, like remote start?
Yes. A spare can be built to do everything the first key does, or scaled back to just the blade and chip that unlock a door and start the engine, without a remote start button or a trunk release. This is agreed before programming begins and is a deliberate choice rather than a lesser copy, useful for a valet, a young driver, or anyone the household wants kept to essential access. Spare Car Key Duplication
What if my vehicle turns out to need dealer-only programming?
Some manufacturers restrict fob programming to a security-gated procedure that only a dealer system or an approved access pathway can complete. When a vehicle falls into that category, the visit identifies it early, explains what the vehicle specifically requires, and documents anything already confirmed, such as a compatible fob, so the eventual dealer visit is not starting the diagnosis over from nothing.
